Whit Cup Football – Monday 30th May.

Having previously qualified at for the semi final stage at the usual pre-tournament at St Thomas’, Garstang CP ‘A’ team played in the Whit cup finals tournament at Moss Lane Field. In the first match, they played against a well-matched Kirkland ‘A’ team and the game was extremely close. Outstanding saves from Will (Y6) kept us in the game, and his ability to target long passes was to our advantage.

In the end, Lucas (Y6) latched onto one of these passes and headed us in front, just before half time. With an end to end second half, our side were tested at the back, but Ben B (Y5) and James (Y6) proved to be a formidable partnership. The team eventually held onto a 1-0 win in the match, qualifying them for the final against St Thomas’.

Filled with confidence following their semi-final victory, The Garstang CP team were rocked by a sudden injury to goalkeeper Will (Y6), 5 minutes before the kick off of the final. A wayward ball struck him in the face, meaning he needed to visit hospital as a precaution. I am glad to report that Will was discharged fairly quickly and that he is now back to full health.

This meant a re-shuffle with Christian (y6) offering to deputise in goal. CP started slowly and conceded an early goal, but this was quickly cancelled out by a curling effort from Lucas (Y6). St Thomas’ then went 4-1 ahead with 3 quick and well worked goals. At half time there was another re-shuffle with Ben (y5) going in goal, allowing Christian to return to his role in midfield. CP played with spirit and determination and with Liam (y5) scoring from outside the area, and Ellis (y5) scoring a header, they were back in the game.

St Thomas’ continued to move the ball well and eventually ran out 6-3 winners, but the perseverance and determination showed by our CP team, made everyone proud.

Congratulations to all the players!!

Mr Marshall
